Creation

Creation

I marvel at the miracle of creation, that one event would perpetuate on a seemingly infinite cycle. God created the world in 6 days, but even while He rested, His creation continued to create further generations of itself in a cycle that has not ended since the creation of space and time itself.

Adam and Eve were not the first created entities. But compared to the rest of creation, God created mankind differently. All of the rest of creation was spoken into being at the very utterance of God’s words, yet for man, God took something he had already created (dirt) and created the first human body from it. The soul, however, was not created in the same way – it was not created from dirt but came upon the dirt when God breathed the breath of life upon the nostrils of the dirt.

Why is that significant? We all know that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation – he existed even before the earth was formed. Adam was the firstborn from creation, while everything else was born of God’s decree- we were formed from God’s creative power, and the same tendency towards creativity became a strong trait of humanity.

The power to create is a greatly underconsidered ability. We were created in the image of God; we carry His likeness not just in physical form but also in certain characteristics and abilities. Love, generosity, and justice are very human qualities that we all gained from our creator, as well as the ability to create beautiful things. From the wheel to the baker’s oven, Archimedes’ pump to the steam engine and now the computer – we have manifested our ability to create so well that we lose sight of the one from whom the ability to create came from. We create because it is in our nature, as if it were an inherited genetic trait. Even people who do not know God have the innate ability to create with beauty and profound intellect.

Even more creative potential, I believe, lies within the hearts of those who love God and have faith in Him for inspiration.

The first person recorded to have the empowerment of the Holy Spirit is Bezalel, the craftsman of the first tabernacle and Ark of the Covenant. Art and Music have for centuries been symbols of worship and are often visual interpretations of visions and dreams received by the artist. Countless inventions and symphonies were born in dreams or attributed to divine inspiration. God is a creative God, and we are creative in His image, but it is sometimes His joy to inspire that creation in us.

We are not all painters, we do not all draw, write songs or dream about music. Some people are inspired with solutions to conflicts, to business deals and investment strategies. I even know forklift drivers and tradesmen who fit this image. Creativity is woven inside all of us, although if we never explore ways to release this creativity into the world, it will remain unused.

In either case – if you have been creative before and lost practice – perhaps consider honing your skills again. If you don’t see yourself as creative, perhaps start praying and considering the ways that you can learn and grow. God will speak to us in any way that we have faith to hear. This world needs beauty that reflects His goodness; it also needs people who are walking in their giftings and His inspiration in every realm of the world – be it a market stall or a boardroom.

No matter what, know that you were created and your Father’s creative genes are hereditary.
